Summer Walker is an R&B artist from Atlanta, Georgia who arrived on the music scene in 2018. She has worked with big names in the music industry such as Rick Ross and Drake. Summer Walker's debut mixtape “Last Day of Summer” received positive reviews for how she constructs her music. Now Summer has released her debut album “Over It,” which includes artists like Usher, A Boogie wit da Hoodie and Jhené Aiko.
“Over It” starts the album with a laid back 90’s R&B beat as Summer talks about how she needs a guy who is ready to give their full attention. Summer’s performance is amazing with her vocals and display of emotion. “Over It” is a good intro to this album and it sets up the next track, “Body,” perfectly.
“Body” starts with a smooth R&B beat where Summer pays homage to the 90’s classic “Get It Together” from 702. Summer discusses how she is deciding on whether to leave a guy or to stay. The production is very smooth with a subtle trap beat providing a cushion for the overall beat. The only negative is that it is too short, and it doesn’t enhance Summer’s performance.
“Drunk Dialing…LODT” talks about how liquor has made her make some bad decisions. Summer does a good job of conveying this topic with her soothing vocals. She also does a good job of adding the FaceTime dial at the end to convey her face-timing somebody drunk. Towards the end, Bryson Tiller gives an amazing verse with his soft voice meshing well with the beat.
“Come Thru” marks Summer Walker's first collaboration with Usher and they talk about how their lovers impacted them. The production is satisfying with its smooth trap beat and Summer Walker harmonizing over it. Usher gives a decent performance and blends well with Summer when they harmonize together.
“Fun Girl” is a raw edit of Summer playing her guitar and singing about how people don’t view her as the traditional woman. She’s very impressive in explaining her subject while delivering some amazing vocals. Similar to “Body”, this song is way too short with Summer only singing one verse. She should definitely do this again since this easily shows how good her voice is.
“Like It” talks about how Walker and 6LACK are falling in love with an individual while also fulfilling their sexual desires. The beat is similar to the other tracks, however, Summer and 6LACK did a good job with enhancing the beat. 6LACK delivers a good verse on this track by providing a different viewpoint on the subject.
“Stretch You Out” marks the first collaboration with Summer and A Boogie wit da Hoodie. Summer discusses how her previous relationship lacked accountability with her ex-lover always being demanding. Summer delivers another decent performance with her impressive vocals and display of emotion. However, A Boogie’s performance is mediocre and he doesn’t enhance the song at all.
“I’ll Kill You” talks about how Summer and Jhené Aiko will hurt anybody who tries to flirt with their significant other. Summer and Jhené deliver the first verse which sounds great over an old school R&B beat. Jhené's verse meshes well with the subject and she also matches the energy Summer is delivering. This shows the amazing chemistry between the two artists and that they should make some more music together.
Overall this is a nice debut album from Summer Walker and it shows her growth in the music industry. However, the duration of the songs are too short and it does take away from her performance. This album can also sound repetitive since some of the songs sound very similar. Besides that, this a great listen especially if you are looking for something to vibe to. 3.5/5
