Dear Longwood,
I’m finding it hard to believe four years have come and gone and I’m struggling to find words to describe how much this school means to me. So, I’m going to use this column to my advantage to say thank you and a few words about some special people, if you don’t mind. Which is funny, because you don’t really have a choice.
To the COMMunity: We’re not just a major, we’re a family. Thank you to the most hardworking, dedicated and helpful professors I’ve ever had. I’ve never seen a group of professors want their students to succeed more than them. I’d like to personally recognize Professor Halliday - thank you for not just being an advisor, but a role model. The journalistic skills I’ve developed are due in part to your unrelenting devotion to helping not only myself, but others succeed.
To my friends: None of you have any idea how much you mean to me. Through the most trying times, you’ve been there to give me a shoulder to lean on, and I don’t know what I’d do without all of you. Because of them, this is my home away from home; they know who they are.
To The Rotunda: This organization helped me grow in ways I never knew before. I met some of the most dedicated individuals who contributed to my growth as a journalist, and I cannot be more thankful. I’ve dreamt of being a sports journalist since I was little, and that dream has been fulfilled. Remember: you are the voice of Longwood. Seek truth and report it. Taco forever!
Finally, my family: Chris, Connie and Jimmy, thank you for always being in my corner and rooting for me from afar. Most importantly, to my mom and dad: I can’t thank you both enough for every sacrifice you’ve made for me to be successful. I’m able to chase my dreams because of you both. I can only hope to be half the person you both are.
As I embark on a new, wonderful journey, I ask my returning Lancer family and those who join in years to come to continue to challenge yourself, set new goals and learn something new each day. You’ll make mistakes along the way, but it is in those mistakes you’ll come out stronger. I’ve experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in my four years, but it was in those moments I grew the most. It’s typical for graduating seniors to tell you, “don’t take your time here for granted, it flies by.” As I reflect on my four years, I can attest to this. Cherish your time here – it truly flies by.
