Leah Powell, wearing 14 for the 2021 season, takes a breather in a match against Campbell in the spring of 2019.

Following a 10-2 defeat at the hand of the 16th ranked Georgia Bulldogs the day before, no one gave Longwood much of a chance in the rematch. The Lancers proved everyone wrong and upset the Bulldogs by a score of 3-2. They did it with a combination of lockdown defense and efficient offense. In terms of defense, the Lancers had twice as many pitchers as runs given up.

Veteran pitchers Arleigh Wood, Angelina Sherba, Leigha Hill and Sydney Backstrom held the Bulldogs to just one run early on and then held off a late rally in the seventh. Mason Basdikis, Leah Powell and Alexis Wayland all added RBIs to give the Lancers the advantage. Lauren Taylor caught the final out of the game in center field to seal the win. The team rushed the pitcher’s mound in excitement, knowing what they had just done.

Head coach Megan Brown earned her first career win at Longwood in an unprecedented victory. The win was only the fourth in program history over a ranked team, and the first since 2018, when the Lancers defeated the 15th ranked California Golden Bears.

For more information on Longwood’s upset win, a more in-depth article will be in next week’s edition.
